« Sound Prints » : c’est sous ce titre qu’a paru, en 2015, le premier album de ce groupe créé quatre ans plus tôt, par deux figures importantes du jazz aux Etats-Unis, le saxophoniste Joe Lovano et le trompettiste Dave Douglas. Jusqu’alors, ces deux musiciens avaient mené des trajectoires qui n’avaient connu que peu d’intersections. Or, l’un comme l’autre possèdent le respect de la tradition et le goût de l’émancipation, le nomadisme esthétique et le sens de l’improvisation. Leur rencontre allait de soi. « Sound Prints » sonne comme un écho à « Footprints », la plus fameuse composition de Wayne Shorter, un exemple pour Lovano et Douglas, qui ont décidé de placer leur quintet sous l’égide de ce musicien emblématique des libertés et des innovations connues par le jazz depuis les années 1960, et qui n’a pas renoncé, à 80 ans passés, à chercher l’inouï. L’ancien sideman de Miles Davis leur sert de référence en termes de composition, mais il a même fourni au groupe quelques titres de sa plume. Avec un tel imprimatur, ce groupe peut s’envoler très haut, d’autant que Joey Baron y tient la batterie. Le tandem poursuit aujourd’hui son aventure avec la parution d’un nouvel album du groupe sur Greenleaf Music, le label du trompettiste : « Scandal ».
