On connaît très mal encore en France la musique de Johannes Maria Staud, ex-élève de Michael Jarrell à Vienne et de Hanspeter Kyburz à Berlin. Pourtant l’ascension en cours de ce jeune compositeur actuellement en résidence à l’Orchestre de Cleveland est fulgurante. Avec comme indicateur objectif indiscutable et impressionnant de l’intérêt que suscite sa musique la confiance que lui témoignent les meilleurs chefs et orchestres : les Berliner Philharmoniker sous la direction de Sir Simon Rattle ont crée son Apeiron pour grand orchestre (en 2005), les Wiener Philharmoniker sous celle de Daniel Barenboïm Segue, pour violoncelle et orchestre (2006) et très récemment, au printemps dernier, Riccardo Chailly à la tête du Gewandhausorchester Leipzig a donné vie à une œuvre conçue pour quatuor à cordes et orchestre.

La partition qui verra le jour le 20 septembre prochain à Strasbourg illustre parfaitement la ligne esthétique du jeune compositeur et le goût pour une recherche formelle audacieuse : Im Lichte est conçue comme une « Musique pour deux pianos et orchestre » : « C’est assez amusant que la pièce soit organisée en cinq parties, ce qui correspond au canon de la forme dramatique ancienne, confie Straud à Antoine Gindt dans un entretien pourtant sur cette œuvre nouvelle qui devrait le révéler définitivement en France. C’est sans doute le subconscient qui opère, car je ne cherche pas consciemment à dramatiser ma musique, les tensions viennent plutôt de l’architecture sonore. Mais d’autre part, l’utilisation de deux pianos crée une sorte de théâtralisation, car ils jouent souvent sur des effets antiphoniques. La cadence par exemple provoque des effets visuels extraordinaires, quand un des pianos joue dans l’extrême aigu alors que l’autre joue dans l’extrême grave. Ce n’est pas un double concerto, mais bien une musique pour deux pianos, organiquement ensemble, comme un seul gros instrument avec orchestre. »
