Etant divisée entre modernistes et néo-tonaux, la France a longtemps mis à l’écart le minimalisme américain. La Cité de la musique rattrape cet oubli en dédiant un « Domaine privé » au plus brillant représentant de ce mouvement : John Adams. Il ne faudrait pour autant pas réduire la musique de l’auteur de Nixon in China aux procédés de répétition et de pulsation rythmique. Son œuvre fait montre d’une inventivité passionnante, comme l’atteste la programmation de la Villette. On pourra ainsi entendre son opéra The Flowering Tree, inspiré de… La Flûte enchantée de Mozart (crée à Vienne à l’occasion des 250 ans du compositeur). Basée sur un conte indien, cette œuvre qui traite des thèmes de la jeunesse et du spirituel sera dirigée par le chef Joana Carneiro à la tête du Chœur et de l’Orchestre Gulbenkian de Lisbonne (le 20 mars à 20h). En création française sera interprétée City Noir, une partition qui rend hommage aux films noirs hollywoodiens. Elle ne fut d’ailleurs pas créée pour rien par l’Orchestre de Los Angeles sous la direction de Gustavo Dudamel. A la Salle Pleyel, ce sera John Adams himself qui sera à la tête de l’Orchestre symphonique de Londres (le 16 mars à 20h). Le programme donnera également à entendre des œuvres de Ravel, Debussy et Stravinsky – autant de sources d’inspiration pour John Adams.
Hommage décalé à Schoenberg
Ce « Domaine privé » permet aussi de réviser ses classiques, avec notamment le monumental Harmonielehre, composé pendant la résidence d’Adams à l’Orchestre de San Francisco. Le programme dirigé par Lawrence Renes avec l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France propose aussi des partitions de Barber et d’Ives, offrant ainsi un joli tour d’horizon de la musique américaine (le 26 mars à 20h). Ne pas manquer également la Chamber Symphony, hommage décalé à Schoenberg (le 27 mars à 20h, avec de nouveau Adams à la baguette), et le Quatuor à cordes (le 23 mars à 20h, par le Quatuor St Lawrence). Seule absence de cette programmation : une mise en scène de Peter Sellars, le complice de toujours de John Adams. Pour la prochaine fois ?
