Comment vous êtes-vous lancé dans ce spectacle ?
John Arnold : Cela fait cinq ans que je suis embarqué dans cette aventure. Quand j’ai lu le livre de Joyce Caroll Oates, que m’avait offert une copine, je ne sais pas ce qui s’est passé, mais c’est devenu une obsession : il fallait que j’en fasse une adaptation. Et puis non, me suis-je dis ! Je veux une pièce et pas seulement une adaptation. Cette pièce est donc librement inspirée du livre : la moitié de la pièce vient du livre, mais j’ai aussi travaillé sur les interviews, les rapports de police, sur tout ce que Marilyn et les autres disaient d’elle. Mais, au-delà de Marilyn, ce qui m’intéresse, c’est la question du regard. Nous sommes constitués par le regard que nous portons sur nous-mêmes, et ce regard est imbriqué dans celui des autres. La vie de Norma Jean Baker l’illustre de façon extraordinaire. Car il est extraordinaire qu’un être pour qui le bonheur aurait sans doute été d’élever quatre gosses dans la banlieue de Los Angeles soit devenu le sex-symbol planétaire absolu. Cette histoire est donc à la fois une tragédie et une formidable comédie. Ca sera une comédie carnivore, un peu comme l’histoire de Cendrillon racontée par Martin Scorsese.
Est-ce l’histoire de Marilyn ou celle de Norma Jean ?
J. A. : Marilyn occupe seulement un tiers du spectacle et Norma Jean, les deux premiers tiers. Celle qui m’intéresse le plus, c’est Norma Jean. Devenir actrice, être une star, ce n’était pas une vocation chez elle. Une partie d’elle-même était faite pour être une petite bonne femme dans la norme la plus débile. L’enveloppe charnelle de Norma Jean fait cohabiter plusieurs personnes. C’est souvent le cas chez les êtres humains, mais chez elle, ces personnes qui vivent ensemble sont extrêmement éloignées les unes des autres : rassemblées, elles forment le fantasme absolu des hommes et des femmes. Marilyn est l’expression même de la désincarnation totale. C’est une image. C’est une construction pure et ce n’est pas un hasard qu’elle soit devenue une des icônes de Warhol. Marilyn, c’est le triomphe du concept ! Pourquoi l’humanité a-t-elle besoin de fabriquer de telles poupées et de les jeter dans la poêle à frire ? Qu’est-ce qui nous lie au sang et à l’acte sacrificiel ? C’est cette question que nous pose Norma Jean, et c’est pourquoi, dans la pièce, le rôle principal est celui de l’œil, de la bête aux mille yeux, de la noria du regard.

Comment ce spectacle s’empare-t-il de cette question ?
J. A. : Il dure 2h50. Ca ne peut pas être un spectacle court. C’est l’histoire stroboscopique d’une vie, celle de Norma Jean Baker, en deux parties : la première de ses six ans au moment où elle devient Marilyn ; la deuxième, de ce moment-là jusqu’à sa mort. L’histoire avance par jets. Rythmiquement, c’est très rapide. Une scène commence alors que l’autre n’est pas finie. Le plateau est nu. Le seul luxe sur lequel je ne transige pas, c’est la distribution, le nombre, soit huit acteurs et cinq actrices. Il faut le nombre si on veut raconter cette histoire : on ne peut pas raconter la construction de la poupée et celle du fantasme sans montrer l’avidité de la multitude. Le maître mot de ce spectacle c’est « hypnose » : dans ce truc qui avance à toute vitesse, il y a des moments suspendus où il ne se passe rien et où le public sent l’abîme en marche.
