Votre parcours est très lié à la France. Quel souvenir gardez-vous de votre poste à la tête de l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Lyon, de 1983 à 1988 ?
John Eliot Gardiner : C’était un terrain vierge. Nous avons créé cet orchestre avec des musiciens jeunes et sans parti pris. Au programme figuraient souvent Haydn et Gluck. Mais je n’ai jamais essayé d’imiter un orchestre soi-disant « authentique ». Je cherchais simplement à faire comprendre la rhétorique, le lien entre musique et parole. J’ai aussi encouragé les musiciens à lire les traités de Quantz ou de Leopold Mozart.
Vous dirigez aujourd’hui deux formations sur instruments anciens en Grande-Bretagne, les English Baroque Soloists et l’Orchestre révolutionnaire et romantique. Comment s’est déroulée la révolution baroque outre-Manche ?
J.E.G. : Nous sommes arrivés dans ce courant après les Belges et avant les Français. Au début, c’était vraiment difficile car il y avait peu de musiciens de bonne qualité. Puis notre ensemble a affiné son style, a développé une vraie ambition. Notre force, c’est le travail régulier avec un chœur, le Monteverdi Choir, qui nous permet de mettre en valeur les affects de la musique. Malheureusement, au niveau financier, c’est compliqué. Nous n’avons pas de subventions, comme c’est le cas en France, et le mécénat privé est difficile à obtenir. Depuis 2000, nous ne travaillons par ailleurs plus pour de grandes maisons de disque. Nos répétitions doivent donc être les plus efficaces possible – les musiciens anglais sont bien connus pour leur rapidité de déchiffrage !
Pourquoi réunir pour l’un de vos concerts à la Salle Pleyel des œuvres de Brahms et des partitions baroques, de Schütz et de Bach ?
J.E.G. : L’œuvre de Brahms trouve son inspiration dans la musique renaissance et baroque. Pour Brahms, la vocalité est essentielle. Avant de s’attaquer aux symphonies, il a ainsi écrit un bon nombre d’œuvres chorales, comme le Requiem allemand. Les rapports qu’il entretient avec Bach sont évidents. Pour ces deux compositeurs, le contrepoint n’est pas seulement une gymnastique intellectuelle, mais un moyen de faire passer les émotions. Par ailleurs, ils ont la même inspiration, le même talent à mettre la parole en musique. Remarquons également que dans les parties de ténor et d’alto ou bien, dans l’orchestre, celles de basson et d’alto, on trouve chez ces deux compositeurs la même beauté mélodique « à l’intérieur » de l’œuvre. C’est cela qui est souvent caché dans les interprétations dites modernes. Ce qui me paraît essentiel, c’est de montrer que l’image de Bach en vieux compositeur romantique allemand n’est pas juste. Son énergie et sa passion sont complètement d’actualité.
En donnant L’Étoile de Chabrier à l’Opéra Comique, vous réhabilitez un ouvrage tombé dans l’oubli…
J.E.G. : Les Français sont très snobs et dénigrent l’opérette ou l’opéra comique. Mais il faut traiter ces genres avec sérieux. La partition de Chabrier est virtuose et exige un contrôle total des timbres. Je suis impatient de diriger cette production, car ce sera mon premier opéra dans la Salle Favart.
