A l’instar d’un grand nombre de baroqueux, John Eliot Gardiner s’est mis à interpréter au fil des années des musiques plus tardives. La saison dernière, on l’a même vu diriger Pelléas et Mélisande de Debussy à l’Opéra-Comique. Peu importe les époques, la démarche philologique de respect du texte reste toujours la même. Pour autant, contrairement à certains de ses collègues, le chef anglais ne se limite pas à utiliser les partitions manuscrites et à faire appel à des instruments anciens. Ses interprétations sont portées à chaque fois par une véritable vision de l’œuvre, où clarté et énergie sont étroitement associées. A la Salle Pleyel, il confronte ce mois-ci Schumann et Brahms. Du premier, l’Ouverture de Manfred et la Symphonie n°3 « Rhénane » et du second, le Double concerto pour violon et violoncelle (avec Thomas Zehetmair et Christian Poltéra). Les instruments anciens de l’Orchestre révolutionnaire et romantique (fondé par Gardiner lui-même en 1989) sont les médiums parfaits de ce répertoire : cordes en boyaux âpres et fruitées, bois délicatement verts et cuivres naturels toujours brillants.
