Après les avoir enregistrées magnifiquement sur instruments anciens il y a quelques années pour Deutsche Grammophon, John Eliot Gardiner retrouve les symphonies de Beethoven sur instruments… modernes. Une démarche similaire à nombre de chefs baroqueux, de Harnoncourt à Herreweghe. A la tête du London Symphony Orchestra (dont certains musiciens optent toutefois pour cordes et archet anciens), le chef anglais dirige lors du dernier week-end de janvier deux concerts dédiés au Maître de Bonn. Le premier confronte l’Ouverture d’«Egmont», le Concerto pour piano n°2 (avec le toucher sensible de Maria Joao Pires) et la Symphonie n°6 «Pastorale» de Beethoven, le second fait le grand écart, en passant de la Symphonie n°1 à la n°9. On se réjouit, comme à chaque fois avec Gardiner, de retrouver cet équilibre toujours parfait entre énergie et précision.
