A l’instar de Sigiswald Kuijken en Belgique ou de Frans Brüggen aux Pays-Bas, John Eliot Gardiner fut en Grande-Bretagne un véritable pionnier dans le renouveau de l’interprétation de la musique baroque. Cela fait trente ans que son ensemble sur instruments anciens, The English Baroque Soloists, joue et enregistre le répertoire du XVIIIème siècle, avec une prédilection pour Bach, dont il grave l’intégrale des Cantates (Soli Deo Gloria, le label fondé par Gardiner himself). Le chef britannique et sa phalange proposeront à la Cité de la musique une autre intégrale du Cantor de Leipzig, celle des Concertos brandebourgeois. En deux concerts donnés la même journée, le mélomane pourra apprécier toute la vigueur éclatante de ces partitions avec vents (hautbois et cors, flûte à bec et trompette) et cordes. Après avoir récemment applaudi Gardiner dans Beethoven et Brahms, c’est le moment de revenir avec lui à ses premières amours.
