« Nulle part, il y aura peu de temps bientôt, se mangèrent ces sept corps avec voracité. Enveloppés dans le torchon humide du soleil, ils se les donnèrent, leurs sexes à leurs bouches, les poitrines aux poitrines, les fesses, les seins et l’envie de mourir. Puis vient l’événement : celui-là de l’exil. Il faut partir. Quitter tout espoir de vous revoir (mon amour). », écrit Pascal Rambert à propos de John & Mary, dont il confie la mise au scène à Thomas Bouvet et aux membres de sa jeune compagnie. Trois couples se déchirent par la parole, s’écorchent et se blessent aux aspérités de l’amour. Leurs blessures sont avivées par l’argent, « centre névralgique de toutes les tensions », qui vient inexorablement pervertir ce qui jamais ne devrait pouvoir s’acheter. Unité de temps, de lieu et d’action : le cercle amoureux enferme les attachements et provoque un « malaise cathartique », dont l’espace scénique intensifie les effets, afin, dit Thomas Bouvet, « d’activer les cordes vibrantes de la sensibilité et de la réflexion » du public.
