Au programme : un nouvel avatar de son groupe légendaire (dans lequel — fait rare — il joue) et deux formations, Heaven and Earth Magick et Simulacrum, auxquelles il confie le soin d’interpréter certaines de ses pièces. Longtemps calqué sur celui d’Ornette Coleman, le Masada Quartet est désormais constitué de Julian Lage (guitare), Jorge Roeder (contrebasse) et Kenny Wollesen (batterie), mais sa fonction est toujours la même : jouer, sous la direction impromptue du saxophoniste, des pièces tirées du Masada Songbook, courts thèmes incisifs composés en référence à son identité juive. La soirée sera poursuivie par Heaven and Earth Magick, formation qui, pour sa part, interprète des pièces entièrement composées pour piano et vibraphone sur lesquelles la paire rythmique Jorge Roeder-Chess Smith improvise en réaction. Quant à Simulacrum, présenté comme le plus extrême des trios d’orgue (merci John Medeski !), il évolue, selon le maître, entre métal, jazz, minimalisme, atonalité, noise et plus encore. À 70 ans, Zorn n’a toujours pas atteint l’âge de raison… et c’est tant mieux !
