Quatre soirées dans la salle de la Porte de Pantin et un concert à la Salle Pleyel dressent le portrait du remuant musicien américain. John Zorn entre en musique au début des années 70 aimanté par le saxophone d’Anthony Braxton, avant de se révéler définitivement à lui-même dans les années 90 à travers un passionnant retour musical sur ses racines juives. Ce retour en forme de madeleine proustienne lui ouvre d’immenses et nouvelles perspectives sous la bannière de différents groupes (en concert à Pleyel le 26) réunis sous l’appellation « Masada ». Compositeur, improvisateur, instrumentiste et leader, John Zorn a largement intégré le jazz à sa démarche artistique mais son univers ne peut évidemment pas s’y réduire. Lors de cette série déclinée entre rock, expérimentations audacieuses de free-punk et musiques pour l’image, il croise le fer avec des musiciens aussi différents et riches que les guitaristes Fred Frith et Marc Ribot, le batteur Joey Baron, le trompettiste Dave Douglas et des interprètes classiques au service de ses compositions.
