Centre d’art et de culture de Meudon
Seul masque dont il nous est parvenu à la fois le texte et les partitions, Cupid and Death est une œuvre musicale totale à l’humour so British. Cupidon et la Mort, de passage dans une taverne, se font échanger leurs flèches : la Nature s’en trouve toute retournée. Le résultat est un bazar irrationnel : les amoureux meurent, les ennemis s’embrassent et les vieillards tombent amoureux. Cette fantaisie théâtrale, en anglais sous-titré, est mise en scène par Jos Houben et Emily Wilson, dont le duo n’en finit plus de surprendre. Le dispositif scénique prend la forme d’espaces délimités par des boxs de bois, et de messages écrits sur des pancartes, tandis que l’Ensemble Correspondances et les chanteurs reprennent les codes baroques d’une partition de Christophe Gibbons et Matthew Locke, sous la direction musicale de Sébastien Daucé. Dans le monde à l’envers imaginé par Shirley, l’orchestre, les chanteurs et les deux comédiens s’emploient à interpréter l’universalité des thèmes de la mort et de l’amour, dans une proposition qui rassemble tous les arts.
