Le public parisien connaît bien Laurent Petitgirard, chef d’orchestre éloigné de toute auto-célébration, ardent défenseur de nombreux compositeurs de son temps, à la tête de l’Orchestre symphonique français qu’il avait fondé en 1988 et, aujourd’hui, de l’Orchestre Colonne. De loin en loin, Laurent Petitgirard a aussi fait découvrir son activité de compositeur, tournée naturellement vers l’écriture orchestrale. Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man, créé à Prague puis à Nice en 2002 dans une mise en scène de Daniel Mesguich, est son premier opéra et s’appuie sur l’histoire vraie de celui auquel David Lynch consacra un film. Fidèle à un langage musical tonal, l’opéra en quatre actes déploie une orchestration très fine, d’une inquiétante douceur toute debussyste, au service d’un livret en français (dû à Éric Nonn) qui prend les personnages à hauteur d’homme. Le rôle-titre, confié à une contralto (Nathalie Stutzmann) lors de la création, repris à Minneapolis en 2006 par le contre-ténor David Walker qui le chante ce soir, est un modèle de caractérisation dramatique.
