C’est peu dire que Jowee Omicil est un boulimique de musiques doublé d’un insatiable voyageur. Depuis qu’il en est passé par Boston voici vingt-cinq ans, le natif de Montréal a multiplié les projets, sous son nom ou convié en grande formation caribéenne ou en duo esthète. Mais celui qui s’illustra auprès de nombreux haïtiens, de Beethova Obas à Emelyne Michel, n’a jamais masqué son désir de revenir aux musiques de ses racines. Il le fit par le passé, souvent en pointillés, sauf qu’avec ce nouvel album dont on fête la sortie ce soir, le saxophoniste choisit d’invoquer la cérémonie du Bois-Caïman, le premier grand soulèvement collectif d’Haïti contre l’esclavage. Et ce non dans un but passéiste, mais bel et bien pour se projeter dès demain, et qui sait proposer des lendemains qui swinguent autrement. C’est tout l’attrait de Bwa Kayiman Ceremony, une mise en son tel un rituel de guérison, où il exorcise les fantômes d’ancêtres maltraités en soufflant un doux vent de révolution dans le droit fil des jazzmen les plus émancipés. Qu’on retrouve notamment le formidable pianiste Jonathan Jurion à ses côtés confirme qu’on tient là un objet des plus spirituels.
