« Le théâtre de la Catastrophe est plus douloureux que la tragédie, puisque la tragédie console avec la restauration, la réaffirmation de valeurs morales existantes. » écrit Howard Barker dans ses Arguments pour un théâtre. Dans Judith (le corps séparé), le dramaturge anglais reprend une figure de l’Ancien Testament, qui flamboie à travers les siècles comme un symbole d’héroïsme patriotique, mille fois brodé dans la littérature et la peinture. En séduisant et en décapitant Holopherne, impitoyable général de Nabuchodonosor, cette jeune et belle veuve de Bethulie sauva en effet le peuple juif de l’impérialisme cruel de Babylone. Sauf qu’ici, le sanguinaire bourreau, loin d’affûter sa haine ravageuse, est plutôt porté à la mélancolie et philosophe sur la mort dans la nuit solitaire. Sauf que Judith se brûle les ailes au jeu de la séduction… « Réécrire le mythe, ou le renverser, émancipe les personnages de leur devoirs, du sens dont ils seraient porteurs et par là même délivre le spectateur d’une obligation de consensus ou de parti pris. », note Chantal de la Coste, scénographe, qui passe aujourd’hui à la mise en scène et fait d’Anne Alvaro, comédienne de haute tension, sa Judith. Un choix qui augure d’une grande justesse…
