Alors que l’Opéra de Paris a récemment remis à l’affiche Jules César (dans une mise en scène nouvelle de Laurent Pelly), le chef Jean-Claude Malgoire – qui fit entrer en 1987 l’opéra de Haendel au répertoire de l’Opéra de Paris – se penche de nouveau sur cette œuvre qui lui est chère. En 1995, il déclarait ainsi à son propos : « On va vers la caractérisation de chaque personnage contrairement à la pratique de l’époque, où les airs étaient quasiment interchangeables, même d’un opéra à l’autre. Ici, c’est totalement impossible. On franchit un grand pas vers les données de l’opéra romantique ». Avec les forces vives de l’Atelier lyrique de Tourcoing et le contre-ténor Christophe Dumaux dans le rôle-titre, il propose de nouveau sa lecture de l’œuvre avec la complicité de Christian Schiaretti. Le directeur du TNP de Villeurbanne retrouve ainsi le chef d’orchestre avec qui il a déjà travaillé sur L’Échelle de soie de Rossini, présenté récemment au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
