Le retour à Tchékhov était attendu dans votre cheminement scénique.
Julie Brochen : Je pourrais passer ma vie dans cette œuvre. La Cerisaie se distingue des autres pièces car c’est la dernière. Les traducteurs André Markowicz et Françoise Morvan évoquent la première pièce d’un nouveau cycle sur le blanc et le vide, un espace abstrait. La beauté étrange de La Cerisaie contient la solitude d’un homme mourant de tuberculose, qui écrit tous les jours. Le rapport à la vie devient complexe, profond et humain tout en jouant d’un charme léger et drôle. C’est la manifestation du goût intense d’exister, ténu et sensible. Les frontières entre le rire et les larmes se confondent ; cet état ne réconforte pas, il aiguise notre regard, nous gifle et nous serre en même temps dans une douceur tenace.

Comment s’empare-t-on de La Cerisaie ?
J. B. : Je pensais qu’il était question d’un immense domaine mais ce n’est pas une propriété que l’on vend comme dans la pièce Oncle Vania. La question posée est de savoir comment mourir en se débarrassant d’une vie. J’ai associé l’idée de la cerisaie à un petit cimetière au cœur d’un village. Comment le vendre ? Comment construire dessus ? Cette cerisaie est comparable à la somme d’une mémoire vive qui ne concerne pas seulement la mort du petit garçon de Lioubov dans le lac, mais embrasse une vie entière. Si nous revenait la mémoire des défunts, que ferait-on de cet héritage ? Lopakhine (Jean-Louis Coulloc’h), le nouveau propriétaire, acquiert le terrain ; il évoque pour l’avenir des lopins de terre en location, des sortes de jardins de maisons d’ouvrier. Cette clairvoyance n’est ni grossière ni vulgaire. La cerisaie, abandonnée, ne produit plus de cerises à confiture : pourquoi ne pas donner aux plus modestes le moyen d’en faire des datchas ? Tchékhov est à l’écoute de la révolution des esprits.
Il s’agit d’une réflexion sur la vie dans la perspective de la mort.
J. B. : Une dimension spectrale et fantomatique hante la pièce, de même la magie. Les personnages se rencontrent et se saluent au premier acte ; ils se quittent en se saluant au quatrième. Au deuxième acte, les tensions et les conflits affleurent jusqu’à la progression du troisième acte qui fait éclater la crise. Pour La Cerisaie, c’est le bal dans l’attente de la vente de la propriété – à la façon du bal du film Titanic, les passagers dansent tandis que le bateau coule. Or, la vente est irrémédiable ; l’attente est une antichambre dans laquelle quelqu’un se bat avec un sursis de vie. Et la mort est solitaire.
La pièce traite du retour puis du départ définitif de l’ancienne propriétaire.
J. B. : La propriétaire Lioubov (Jeanne Balibar) ne revient pas pour se débarrasser de la propriété. C’est la vie qui est racontée à travers ces arbres fruitiers qu’on a vu fleurir, Lioubov aime la vie. Et quand on est confronté à la violence, on redevient enfant, mais la chambre d’antan n’est plus la même car le temps a fait son ouvrage. Le rapport à la mort de l’autre s’impose naturellement.
La scénographie prend la mesure de l’espace imaginaire de La Cerisaie.
J. B. : Julie Terrazzoni a conçu une sorte de passage ou de vestibule ouvert. Avec le jeu de perspective d’un rideau en verre, le salon est comme installé dans une verrière brisée par un orage de grêle. La lumière joue dans les éclats transparents. Cette jolie réalité « abîmée » désigne à la fois la beauté éphémère du lieu et celle du théâtre.
