Philippe Boesmans est sans doute parmi les compositeurs lyriques d’aujourd’hui celui qui laisse le plus le théâtre l’inspirer. Schnitzler, Shakespeare, Gombrowicz ont ainsi tour à tour fourni la matière d’opéras inventifs, même s’ils conservent une structure relativement classique. Avec Julie en 2005, Philippe Boesmans s’appuie sur une pièce de Strindberg, Mademoiselle Julie, pour composer une œuvre d’une noirceur foudroyante et pourtant parée de couleurs qui évoquent – comme souvent chez le compositeur – l’univers de Richard Strauss, mais avec une étonnante économie de moyens. Ce huis clos à trois (la jeune aristocrate, le domestique qu’elle séduit et la fiancée de celui-ci) glisse peu à peu d’un marivaudage boulevardier vers la tragédie, les personnages étant pris au piège de leurs transgressions. Matthew Jocelyn qui avait signé la reprise de Reigen présentée à l’Athénée en 2004 poursuit ici son travail avec le compositeur. Jean-Paul Dessy dirige l’Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles de Bruxelles et les trois jeunes solistes, Carolina Bruck-Santos, Alexander Knop et Agnieszka Slawinska.
