« Au Japon, j’ai d’emblée eu l’impression de me trouver chez moi. C’est l’un des rares endroits du monde où la manière d’être, de vivre n’a pour moi rien d’exotique mais me paraît au contraire familière, parfaitement naturelle. » disait Maurice Béjart. Fasciné par le pays du soleil levant, le chorégraphe noua d’étroites relations avec le Tokyo Ballet, fondé en 1964 et l’un des meilleurs défenseurs de la danse classique. Il lui confia douze de ses ballets et y réalisa trois créations. S’inspirant d’une pièce de Kabuki emblématique de la culture populaire, le chorégraphe donna sa libre adaptation de la légende séculaire des quarante-sept rônins, parabole de la loyauté, du sacrifice et du dévouement. Créé en 1986, Kabuki relie ainsi la tradition séculaire et la modernité, le mythe et le quotidien, en une œuvre portée par la vigueur des lignes et la puissance des symboles. Invitée à l’Opéra national de Paris, le Tokyo Ballet reprend l’une des œuvres les plus marquantes de son répertoire.
