C’est entre l’immensité du cosmos et le mouvement intime des sentiments que se situe l’inspiration de Kaija Saariaho qui appartient, comme par exemple Philippe Manoury, à la première génération de compositeurs qui a d’emblée maîtrisé l’outil informatique et l’extrême raffinement de la pensée créatrice qu’il permet. Elle a ainsi souvent travaillé à l’Ircam, même si les cinq concerts qui ici découvrent son « jardin secret » ne font aucun usage de l’électronique musicale. Ce sont plutôt des archétypes esthétiques qui sont mis en avant : le mouvement dans Maa, dans une chorégraphie nouvelle de Luca Vegetti, ou la lumière dans Lanterna magica, l’une des cinq pièces données en création française. Si les ouvrages lyriques de Kaija Saariaho ont souvent choisi la langue française de son librettiste Amin Maalouf (une suite tirée du dernier en date, Émilie, sera donnée le 23 avril), elle a aussi mis en musique la langue finnoise dans ses Leino Songs et c’est en toute logique que ces concerts établissent une filiation avec les pages les plus novatrices de Sibelius (le Quatuor « Voces intimae » ou la Septième Symphonie).
