La musique de Kaija Saariaho combine sensualité sonore et efficacité dramatique. Souvent interprétées à Paris (l’Opéra Bastille a accueilli la création de son deuxième opéra Adriana Mater en 2006), ses œuvres révèlent une certaine parenté avec le courant « spectral » de la création française. Les orchestres français, en tout cas, semblent à l’aise dans cette musique, en particulier l’Orchestre de Paris, qui présentait, en 2004, le concerto pour violon Graal Théâtre de la compositrice finlandaise. Œuvre la plus ancienne au programme de ce concert monographique, Orion (2002) pour grand orchestre est représentative du style de Kaija Saariaho : atmosphère mystérieuse, nimbée de timbres nocturnes et parcourue de rythmes qui dans le final confinent au mouvement perpétuel, quelques accents faisant irrésistiblement penser au Sacre du printemps. Le violoncelliste Anssi Karttunen, fidèle interprète de Kaija Saariaho est le soliste de deux œuvres récentes : le concerto Notes on light (2007, création française) et Mirage (en création), pour laquelle il sera rejoint par la soprano Karita Mattila.
