Spécialiste du biwa de Satsuma, luth à manche court pluriséculaire, Kakushin Nishihara est loin d’être une traditionnaliste. A l’image des tatouages qui zèbrent son visage et ornent son crâne nu, la jeune femme a fait de cet instrument habituellement attaché à la récitation épique le vecteur d’un expressionnisme cru et dramatique, qui semble contenir en lui les tensions de la culture nipponne, friande d’ultramodernité urbaine tout en restant aliénée par le poids de ses traditions. Chez elle, l’improvisation radicale se mêle au répertoire canonique, des échos noisy entrent en collision avec le geste ancestral, la voix fascine par ses étrangetés, donnant à ses performances des apparences de cérémonial contemporain, énigmatique et dérangeant.
