Karl Marx (1818-1883) a enfin obtenu une autorisation spéciale du Paradis : il peut revenir sur terre une heure, afin de donner une ultime leçon de philosophie. Atterrissant à cause d’un cafouillage bureaucratique en plein New York (et non à Londres), le père du Capital et du Manifeste du parti communiste, tout droit venu du dix-neuvième siècle, se lance donc dans un joyeux monologue, pas du tout dogmatique, mais né au contraire de sa confrontation problématique avec le monde d’aujourd’hui. Le personnage historique devient ici personnage de fiction. « Un bonhomme qui ironise sur lui-même, évoque sa fille, sa femme, ses difficultés à joindre les deux bouts, ses beuveries et engueulades mémorables avec Bakounine. Une vie simple. », dit le metteur en scène Denis Lanoy, qui partage un point commun avec l’auteur Howard Zinn : la dénonciation des injustices. Activiste au sein du mouvement pour les Droits Civiques, militant pacifiste, ouvrier puis professeur à l’université de Boston, Howard Zinn (né en 1922, disparu cette année fin janvier) a tout au long de sa vie bousculé les bonnes consciences et exercé son esprit critique, comme le prouve son best-seller Une Histoire populaire des Etats-Unis. « Je voulais montrer un Marx furieux que ses conceptions aient été déformées jusqu’à être identifiées aux cruautés staliniennes […]. Je souhaite que cette pièce n’éclaire pas seulement Marx et son temps, mais également notre époque et la place que nous y tenons. » Créée à Avignon l’été dernier, une œuvre à découvrir.
