La légende relate que le Kathputli serait né « du désir d’un prince qui,
pour se divertir durant des nuits d’insomnie, aurait convoqué ces poupées de
bois qui dansent ». Réinvestissant et renouvelant l’art des « Bhatt » (la
caste des marionnettistes), Zazie Hayoun a inventé une forme de spectacle
poétique qui mêle danses et marionnettes, cultures de la représentation
européenne et indienne. Scènes de la vie quotidienne à travers des personnages
pittoresques, attractions présentées à une assemblée de maharajas réunis pour un
festin à la cour de l’empereur Akbar : Kathputli, danses et
marionnettes du Rajasthan évoque la mémoire d’un peuple en puisant dans
l’évocation des contes et légendes Rajput. Un divertissement à la fois simple et
sophistiqué précédé de « l’exposition vivante » Le Jugaad ? La rue des
petits métiers et suivi de la projection du documentaire Bouteilles
vides, bidons rouillés de Zazie Hayoun.
