La légende relate que le Kathputli serait né « du désir d’un prince qui, pour se divertir durant des nuits d’insomnie, aurait convoqué ces poupées de bois qui dansent ». Réinvestissant et renouvelant l’art des « Bhatt » (la caste des marionnettistes), Zazie Hayoun a inventé une forme de spectacle poétique qui mêle danses et marionnettes, cultures de la représentation européenne et indienne. Scènes de la vie quotidienne à travers des personnages pittoresques, attractions présentées à une assemblée de maharajas réunis pour un festin à la cour de l’empereur Akbar : Kathputli, danses et marionnettes du Rajasthan évoque la mémoire d’un peuple en puisant dans l’évocation de contes et légendes. Fascinée par la beauté et la féerie de ces poupées que des manipulateurs invisibles animent depuis les cintres, Zazie Hayoun a choisi de redonner toute sa valeur au Kathputli et de mêler une danseuse au spectacle. Un divertissement fascinant, sophistiqué et joyeux.
