Cette production salzbourgeoise de 1998, commandée par Gérard Mortier au metteur en scène Christoph Marthaler avait été saluée en son temps, puis lors de sa reprise au Palais Garnier en 2004, comme un remarquable exemple de lecture théâtrale de l’opéra de Janacek, sombre histoire d’adultère à l’issue tragique. Réalisme et poésie s’y côtoient, ce qui est en soi une belle compréhension de l’esthétique du compositeur, où le drame social n’est jamais loin de basculer vers le fantastique. Angela Denoke dans le rôle-titre et Jane Henschel dans celui de la Kabanicha étaient déjà présentes en 1998. Parmi les « nouveaux venus », on retrouve Vincent Le Texier (Saviol Dikoy) et Jorma Silvasti, dans le rôle de Boris, l’amant par qui le drame arrive.
