Il fut le dernier saxophoniste tout à fait admiré par le maestro des dernières années électriques de Miles Davis. De cette rencontre miraculeuse dans un parcours de musicien, Kenny Garrett semble avoir retenu avant tout la nécessité de rester libre de ses choix, fussent-ils discutés ou critiqués, et de rester fidèle à soi et à ses envies. Dans le projet de son nouveau quintet, celui de l’album « Do your Dance », il compose un véritable hymne à la danse et au partage spontané du bonheur musical. « J’ai toujours voulu écrire une musique sérieuse, mais je veux aussi que les gens dansent ! » confie Kenny Garrett. Du Brésil à l’Afrique, des Caraïbes au jazz, de valse en mambo, son quintette acoustique embrasse et embrase toutes les musiques, pourvu qu’elles soulèvent l’âme et surtout les jambes. Avec Vernell Brown (piano), Corcoran Holt (contrebasse), McClenty Hunter (batterie) et Rudy Bird (percussions).
