Philharmonie de Paris / Sounds of the Ancestors
Paru l’an dernier, son dernier album en date s’intitule « Sounds of the Ancestors » et pour l’occasion, le saxophoniste Kenny Garrett y donne l’illustration de ce qui compose son ADN musical. On y trouve pêle-mêle le son de Detroit, la ville d’Aretha Franklin et de Motown où il est né, qui est aussi une grande cité du jazz ; un coup de chapeau au regretté trompettiste Roy Hargrove, dans l’esprit groovy du RH Factor croisé au refrain de « A Love Supreme » de John Coltrane ; un autre titre dédié à deux batteurs, Art Blakey, porte-étendard du hard bop, et Tony Allen, inventeur de l’afro-beat ; mais surtout une florescence de rythmes qui regardent vers la Caraïbe et, au-delà, vers l’Afrique, terre ancestrale et mystérieuse. La musique de Kenny Garrett est, on l’aura compris, fortement enracinée, et elle se déploie en concert avec une énergie et une fougue que peu de musiciens sont capables de dégager. Entouré par un groupe soudé, l’altiste ne joue jamais à demi.
