À seulement 18 ans et lauréat de plusieurs concours internationaux, Kevin Chen s’affirme comme l’une des figures majeures de la nouvelle génération du piano. Pour sa première venue à la Fondation Louis Vuitton, et après une tournée dans les festivals en France l’été dernier, il offre un condensé du répertoire romantique. De Beethoven, il choisit peut-être la moins jouée des dernières Sonates, l’opus 101. La Polonaise-Fantaisie et la Ballade n°4 comptent parmi les chefs-d’oeuvre de la déclamation lyrique de Chopin. Quant au génie de Liszt, Kevin Chen en révèle les diverses facettes : la réinvention des mélodies populaires avec deux Czardas, les évocations poétiques des Années de pèlerinage dans le Sonnet 104 de Pétrarque où plane le souvenir de Chopin et les Jeux d’eaux à la Villa d’Este qui anticipent Ravel, et les transcriptions de pages vocales, avec Le roi des Aulnes de Schubert et les Réminiscences de Norma – de Bellini – qui appartiennent au genre des paraphrases d’opéra dans lequel s’est illustré le maître hongrois.
