C’est suite à un voyage effectué comme observateur à Kichinev, après le pogrom perpétré contre la population juive en avril 1903, que le grand poète Haïm Nahman Bialik écrivit Dans la ville du massacre. Cri du cœur d’un homme s’insurgeant contre la résignation et la passivité de ses coreligionnaires, ce long poème enjoint le peuple juif à se révolter pour reprendre son destin en main. Dans Kichinev 1903, Zohar Wexler place ce texte mythique de la poésie hébraïque face aux souvenirs de sa propre famille. Car c’est dans cette ville de l’actuelle Moldavie que deux de ses grands-parents ont vécu avant d’émigrer en Palestine, au début des années 1930. Reconstituant une forme de puzzle historique, partant sur les traces de ses aïeux et de Bialik, le comédien réalise ici un véritable voyage. Le voyage intime et personnel d’un artiste d’aujourd’hui vers le berceau de son identité.
