L’homme est jeune. Il est né à Haïfa. Il a grandi sur les flancs du mont Carmel, en Israël. Puis il est parti étudier le théâtre à Chicago, ensuite à Paris. Il n’a pas quarante ans, et pourtant il se souvient. C’était en 1903, les 6 et le 7 avril, le dernier jour de Pessah et le premier jour de Pâques. Durant deux jours, la haine dévora toute raison. Sous le regard attentiste complice de la police et de l’armée, un pogrom ravagea la communauté juive de cette ville de Bessarabie, abandonnant une cinquantaine de morts, plusieurs centaines de blessés et femmes violées, des milliers de maisons dévastées. Zohar Wexler se souvient. Kichinev résonne du lointain de l’enfance, par ses grands-parents originaires de là-bas, par l’école qui fixa les faits à l’encre noire, par les mots du poète Bialik (1873-1934) qui tance son peuple au feu du verbe pour subir sans révolte la horde barbare et offrir son destin résigné aux bourreaux voisins.
Sur les traces des siens
« Que s’est-il passé, il y a plus de cent ans, pour que je sois, aujourd’hui en vie pour porter leur témoignage, le mien ? Et quelle est l’histoire des miens qui n’ont pas survécu ? ». Guidé par ces questions, Zohar Wexler a fouillé la mémoire, les archives, les témoignages. Il a scruté l’Histoire, son histoire, parcouru les six carnets où Bialik consigna méthodiquement les récits d’horreur recueillis au lendemain du pogrom. Il est allé à Kichinev aussi. Peut-être en espérant se laver les mains avec de l’eau pour quitter le monde des morts pour celui des vivants… Seul en scène sous une douce voute de pierres brutes, il raconte maintenant sa quête. Ses recherches, ses questionnements, ses indignations. Il cerne peu à peu les actes et les événements, mais surtout montre comment la déflagration violente du passé continue de se propager au cœur présent des jeunes générations. La récitation du poème de Bialik, Dans la ville des massacres, en revanche convainc beaucoup moins, lestée par une diction ampoulée. Quelques mots cependant restent accrochés fort. « Toute la douleur de leur mort inutile, toute la détresse de leur existence. Ils s’y cramponnent en tremblant, et, dans leur cachette, ils protestent, leurs yeux demandent : pourquoi ? … Mais qui sauf Dieu, pourrait supporter un tel silence?… ».
