Pièce-partition en 74 morceaux, 12 mouvements, 3 parties et 2 actes, King retrace une double histoire. Celle de l’existence de King C. Gillette, petit représentant de commerce qui, en 1895, invente le rasoir jetable, devenant le fondateur de l’un des premiers empires industriels. Celle des idéaux égalitaires qu’il théorisa dans La Société du peuple, ouvrage projetant de rendre l’humanité heureuse et harmonieuse en détruisant le capitalisme. « La pièce procède tantôt d’un “détriplement”, explique Arnaud Meunier, pour faire exister la “galaxie” de King C. Gillette (le héros est appréhendé à trois âges de son existence), tantôt d’un trio d’ordre plus musical dans lequel tous se rejoignent pour développer leur utopie. Trois comédiens vont donc nous embarquer dans ces aventures, dans ces énergies où trois hommes (qui n’en sont qu’un) nous narrent cet irrépressible désir de dépasser l’existant, d’inventer constamment autre chose, pour le bien de tous. »Eclairant la contradiction d’un homme qui rêve un monde meilleur tout en cautionnant pleinement le modèle capitaliste qui lui est proposé, King s’inscrit dans la dramaturgie morcelée qui caractérise le théâtre de Michel Vinaver : « un théâtre comme je les aime, s’enthousiasme le metteur en scène, revigorant, curieux et jouissif, de ceux qui posent question et nous tiennent actifs pendant la représentation ».
