C’est en 1995, sous le nom d’Orient Express Moving Shnorers, qu’a commencé l’aventure de ce groupe qui va reprendre les codes traditionnels d’une tradition, le klezmer, pour les dynamiser, dynamiter, en suivant les inflexions et improvisations jazz. Vont s’ensuivre des années de tournées, et plusieurs disques qui imposent le combo, entre-temps rebaptisé Klezmer Nova, aux avant-postes européens d’un mouvement né dans les années quatre-vingt à New York. Publié en 2003, l’album « Delicatessen » fait alors office de marqueur pour toute une génération qui va s’engouffrer dans cette musique aux accents toniques et ponctuations ludiques, un drôle de swing déjanté tout à fait raccord avec l’esprit des auteurs originaux, les emblématiques clarinettistes Naftule Brandwein et Dave Tarras.
L’entre-deux, espace de création
« Un mariage sans klezmorim est pire qu’un enterrement sans larmes », prédit un proverbe yiddish. Si la scène hexagonale célèbre à tout bout de chant les noces avec le klezmer, elle était devenue orpheline de Klezmer Nova. En effet, depuis quelques années, le groupe avait quelque peu disparu des radars, son leader, le saxophoniste Pierre Wekstein, étant parti vivre à la Réunion. Le voilà de retour et avec lui toute sa fine équipe, pour partie renouvelée, tout comme le répertoire boosté par cette expérience australe, notamment sur le fécond terrain rythmique. Ce qu’affirme, entre les lignes, le titre de ce recueil, « L’Entre-Deux », rappelant les enjeux d’un idiome hybride par essence. Une renaissance en forme de renouveau !
