« Est-ce que ça vous chatouille, ou est-ce que ça vous grattouille ? » : la réplique est célèbre et la pièce ne l’est pas moins ! Les aventures de Knock, charlatan jouant de l’hypocondrie et de l’ignorance des habitants de Saint-Maurice jusqu’à faire fortune sur le dos des naïfs, sont un bonheur de drôlerie et regorgent de trésors d’observation des travers de notre espèce. Guy Simon relève le défi d’adapter et de mettre en scène ce texte archiconnu en renouvelant ses effets comiques et moqueurs, tout en montrant son actualité. Il s’agit, pour la troupe du Kronope, de « mettre en valeur l’humour grinçant du texte et la satire sociale tout en restant dans le ton de la comédie, de la farce ». Stylisant les habitants du bourg, Martine Baudry et Louis David Rama inventent des masques qui leur donnent des allures de personnages de la commedia dell’arte et des trognes à la Daumier. Arts visuels, jeux du corps, de la voix et des métamorphoses, danse, musique et lumières contribuent à faire de cette farce un savoureux et désopilant jeu de massacre.
