La philosophie de Knock, le médecin flamboyant et douteux de la pièce éponyme de Jules Romain, rendue mythique grâce à l’interprétation de Louis Jouvet, tient à ce que tous les habitants de Saint-Maurice en Dauphiné accèdent à l’ « existence médicale », étant entendu que « tout homme sain est un malade qui s’ignore ». C’est que le faux docteur apparemment désintéressé désire – sous couvert de la générosité et de l’ « humanitarisme » de la consultation gratuite du lundi – gagner un argent facile sur le dos de ses patients benêts. Après avoir mis de son côté, le pharmacien et l’instituteur corrompus, Knock persuade les habitants de la bourgade qu’ils sont gravement malades, ce qui fait sa fortune facile. Succédant au docteur Parpalaid dont le cabinet était déserté par les patients, le nouveau médecin fait de l’hôtel de Saint-Maurice une maison de santé qui refuse du monde, au milieu des draps blancs d’un campement militaire de guerre. L’ancien professionnel est offusqué de la malhonnêteté manifeste de son confrère qui le convainc de maladie. Un monde à l’envers, un retournement de situation exemplaire où tout devient possible. Le metteur en scène Nikson Pitaqaj y est allé « brut de décoffrage » pour dénoncer les travers d’une société infantile, soumise aux aléas de qui parle plus fort et se fait respecter dans la crainte.
Des personnages de bandes dessinées déjantées
Guitares des Balkans, ambiance populaire bon enfant, esprit convivial, rien ne manque du « parler vrai » d’une population joviale autant que profondément naïve. Le Knock de Pitaqaj dessine la silhouette d’un médecin luciférien, hystérique et tendu à l’extrême, hurlant et tapant du pied, se penchant dans des gestes expressionnistes étudiés, brossant la fresque funeste d’une société qui vampirise les plus faibles et plus fragiles. Knock étant présenté comme un personnage machiavélique dès le début de l’intrigue, la montée dramatique attendue ne peut s’initier, coincée dans une outrance sans progression. Les acteurs – les patients et les soignants – ont une singularité indéniable dans cet univers inquiétant de méthodes nouvelles à construire, pour un contact qui soit meilleur avec la clientèle. Ils forment sur le plateau une sorte de tribu improbable et caricaturale, attachée à ses rites, ses rires et ses folies. Ces personnages de bandes dessinées déjantées sont joués par Henri Vatin, Joseph Hernandez, Lina Cespedes, Yan Brailowsky, Zachary Lebourg, Remy Leloup, Nikson Pitaqaj, Anne-Sophie Pathé et Jean-Yves Duparc. Des figures extravagantes, mi-bouffonnes, mi-burlesques. À l’excès.
