Le vidéaste Leo Warner et la metteure en scène Katie Mitchell pénètrent chez Mademoiselle Julie par la porte de service. L’intrigue reste évidemment celle que l’on connaît (Jean, le valet, délaisse sa fiancée Christine, la cuisinière, pour mademoiselle Julie, la fille du maître de maison), mais n’apparaît qu’à travers ce qu’en retransmet le personnage de Christine, qui est placé au centre du spectacle. Réputée pour être une « dépoussiéreuse de classiques », Katie Mitchell s’empare de manière radicale des pièces qu’elle met en scène. C’est ce qu’elle fait une fois de plus en confiant aujourd’hui les clefs de l’œuvre d’August Strindberg au personnage de Christine, renversant par là même les perspectives du texte et créant une représentation entre théâtre et cinéma. A la fois derrière et devant la caméra, en train de filmer et d’être filmée, Christine joue sous nos yeux son drame intime, pendant que nous parviennent à travers cloisons, planchers, portes entrebâillées, les éclats de voix ponctuant les tiraillements amoureux de Julie et de Jean. Ainsi, autour de gros plans des mains de la cuisinière préparant des rognons pour son fiancé ou se lissant les cheveux, Kristin, nach Fraülein Julie tend à installer « une forme d’harmonie visuelle et sonore doucement amère où les sons, doublés en direct, et les musiques, jouées sur scène, se mêlent aux cris de joie de la Saint-Jean et au sifflement d’un merle qui n’en finit pas de saluer le crépuscule d’un monde ».
