Formée à la Toho Gakuen School of Music de Tokyo par le légendaire spécialiste des marimba Keiko Abe puis en Europe au Conservatoire de Rotterdam, Kuniko Kato a remporté de nombreux prix internationaux avant de développer l’une des plus spectaculaires carrières de percussionniste soliste de la scène musicale internationale. Ce programme puise dans le répertoire de ses deux enregistrements les plus remarqués, l’un et l’autre fruits d’échanges intenses avec les compositeurs. Elle reprend d’abord sa propre transcription pour steel pans, marimba et vibraphone d’Electric Counterpoint de Steve Reich, avant de se consacrer à un autre géant de la musique minimaliste, l’estonien Arvo Pärt. « La musique d’Arvo Pärt, d’une extrême simplicité, nous entraîne dans un univers sonore d’une grande beauté, à la fois triste et doux. Exprimer ces subtilités avec des percussions était pour moi un défi considérable », explique Kuniko Kato, qui livre sa vision éminemment subtile et délicate de Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten (1977), Fratres (1977), et Spiegel im Spiegel (1978), trois partitions majeures et célèbres de Pärt. Purl Ground (2003) de Hywel Davies complète le programme.
