On l’a connu incarnant le chanteur de jazz à quatre épingles. Encore récemment, sous son meilleur jour, il brillait auprès de Branford Marsalis et son quartet d’as du jazz. Surprise ! Kurt Elling vient poser son chant à un endroit où on ne l’attendait pas. Le voici qui s’est acoquiné avec Charlie Hunter. Éclectique et atypique, ce guitariste remarqué au cours de la décennie 1990 pour sa capacité à jouer mélodie et lignes de basse simultanément, sur un instrument à sept cordes totalement customisé, avait un peu disparu après quelques collaborations auprès de la star de la nu-soul D’Angelo (il joue sur le mythique « Voodoo ») ou du groupe A Tribe Called Quest. Bonne pioche. Mais ce n’est pas tout. Un grooveur pouvant en cacher un autre, Elling a choisi derrière la batterie de son groupe Corey Fonville, nouveau petit monstre de l’instrument qui s’est fait un nom avec Christian Scott, et aux claviers DJ Harrison, membre (avec Fonville) du combo en vogue Butcher Brown. Plaçant son nouveau projet sous les auspices du Superblue de Freddie Hubbard — parmi les plus heavy funk du genre — Elling s’engouffre dans les sillages de la Great Black Music, offrant un melting-pot bluesy qui ne manque pas de soul, ni au goût, ni à l’oreille.
