On doit à Mendelssohn la redécouverte, en plein Romantisme, de l’œuvre de Bach. Il a lui-même dirigé la Passion Selon Saint-Matthieu à Berlin en 1836. Dix ans plus tard, il compose un oratorio grandiose, basé sur le Livre des Rois : Elias, influencé à la fois par Bach et Haendel. Cette œuvre épique, créée avec plus de 400 exécutants, sera donnée au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées sous la direction de Kurt Masur. Le chef honoraire de l’Orchestre National de France a dirigé pendant vingt-six ans l’Orchestre du Gewandhaus de Leipzig, la formation dont Mendelssohn fut lui-même le chef attitré. Cette soirée marquée par le sceau de la filiation réunira le Choeur de Radio France, l’Orchestre National de France, ainsi qu’un casting de solistes d’où ressort l’exceptionnel Bryn Terfel dans le rôle-titre. Le chanteur gallois est aujourd’hui l’un des rares barytons-basses à allier de manière aussi remarquable l’intensité de la projection à l’intelligence du texte.
