Avant de découvrir cette année le travail de Benjamin Millepied au cinéma en tant que réalisateur inspiré par Carmen, on pourra apprécier ce programme porté par sa compagnie américaine. Créé en 2012, le L.A Dance Project a toujours été, plutôt qu’une compagnie, une plateforme où des chorégraphes, plasticiens, musiciens ont été invités à créer pour des danseurs de haut vol. Le Théâtre des Champs-Elysées accueille aujourd’hui trois chorégraphies signées par le patron, où se révèle son attention à la musique. Homeward travaille sur la singularité rythmique de la partition de Ahyem, de Bryce Dessner, compositeur et musicien qui n’a jamais voulu choisir entre le rock et le classique. Dans Orpheus Highway, le chorégraphe mêle le mythe d’Orphée à la musique de Steve Reich, sur une création vidéo. Quant à Bach Studies (part 2), dont c’est la création mondiale à Paris, elle déploie une rencontre au sommet entre Jean-Sébastien Bach et le compositeur David Lang, que la danse unit dans une écriture complexe mais délicate.
