Le jazz et la Belgique, c’est une vieille histoire qui remonte à très loin, avant même la création du mot, puisque c’est à un Belge, Adolphe Sax, que l’on doit la création d’un instrument qui va devenir l’emblème de cette musique. C’est aussi là que naquit Django Reinhardt. Et depuis un siècle, ce sont des bataillons de musiciens qui sont formés outre-quiévrain. Sadi, Toots Thielemans, Benoît Quersin, René Thomas, ou plus près de nous les terribles collectifs Aka Moon, Octurn ou Flat Earth Society, sans oublier le guitariste Philip Catherine, le chanteur David Linx ou le pianiste Eric Legnini.
L’heure de la relève
Autant dire que les cadets qui présentent la relève actuelle ont de qui tenir. Six groupes pour témoigner de la diversité d’horizons en scène, tel est l’enjeu de Be.Jazz. En ouverture, le saxophoniste et chanteur Nicolas Kummert rendra hommage à Prévert à travers le projet « Voices », qui mêle le chant du jazz et le terreau africain. Le même musicien sera également présent dans la seconde partie, Qu4tre, un quartette qui laboure le sillon du jazz-rock. Le lendemain, place à la chanteuse Fanny Bériaux, aux frontières de la pop, tandis que le groupe Collapse se situe plus dans une veine post-bop, avec de belles saillies free. Enfin, le dernier soir, le trio de Manuel Hermia, pianiste qui a œuvré sur de nombreuses traditions, épice ses improvisations d’éléments orientaux, à l’image des “rajazz”, alors que le quintette Rackham élabore une synthèse originale entre les musiques de l’Ouest américain (country, rock, surf…) et les dérivations psychédéliques. Somme toute, un bon trip que ces trois jours en mode belge.
