Écrite à l’origine, en 1921, pour un spectacle de marionnettes, cette adaptation du célèbre conte de Perrault est l’un des premiers essais lyriques d’Ottorino Respighi. Ce compositeur marqué par l’esthétique rossinienne s’était jusque là surtout illustré dans le domaine symphonique ; ses partitions très colorées (Les Fontaines de Rome, Les Pins de Rome…) sont d’ailleurs aujourd’hui encore inscrites au répertoire. C’est précisément l’idée de couleur qui anime la mise en scène de l’Argentine Valentina Carrasco : « La vie se déroule en couleur, jusqu’à l’arrivée de l’hiver. À ce moment-là, tout perd sa couleur, couvert par le blanc de la neige et par le gris du ciel. La couleur reviendra seulement à l’instant où Avril, avec la puissance de l’amour, réveillera la princesse ».
