Philip Glass voue un véritable culte à Jean Cocteau. Non pas nécessairement au compagnon de route de Satie et du Groupe de Six – encore qu’on puisse trouver chez le compositeur minimaliste quelques leçons retenues du Coq et l’arlequin. C’est sa poésie comme médium permettant de tout dire, tout montrer, tout suggérer que Philip Glass veut porter par sa musique. Il l’a fait notamment avec le roman Les Enfants terribles dont il a fait un « dance opera » (1996), présenté deux fois à l’Athénée, en 2009 et 2012. Avec La Belle et la Bête (1994), le compositeur s’empare de la « poésie cinématographique » de Cocteau. Les images – fabuleuses – s’insèrent tel un personnage dans la musique de ce quasi-opéra ; elles y ont la même importance que les voix, l’orchestre (riche en percussions et en registres extrêmes) accompagnant les unes comme les autres.
