« Elle ne négligeait rien pour rendre sa maison agréable. On y jouait à la bouillotte dans un salon, on causait dans un autre.» Avant Balzac dans Un prince de Bohême et avant Labiche dans La Cagnotte, le jeu de bouillotte est un jeu de cartes en vogue au dix-huitième siècle, une sorte de brelan rapide à quatre personnes. Telle est la situation de départ de ce théâtre de divertissement, une partie de bouillotte chez le rentier Champbourcy à La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, avec le fermier Colladan, le pharmacien Cordenbois, le notaire Renaudier, le percepteur Baucantin, Léonida, la sœur de Champbourcy, et Blanche la propre fille de ce dernier. Les joueurs, petite société rurale et caractéristique des bien-pensants de l’époque, déposent leur dû dans une cagnotte, une somme peu à peu économisée. Or, cette caisse commune est vouée à la dissipation : « Si nous allions manger la cagnotte à Paris… » On parle en même temps des menus faits de la petite bourgade, l’annonce dans le journal, de la quête de mariage chez une femme inconnue qui s’affiche sans pudeur… Il n’en faut pas plus pour que se noue à la va-vite l’intrigue d’une farce cocasse et grotesque dont les ressorts ne lassent pas. Certes, les préjugés sociaux, les satisfactions vaines étouffent ces personnages ridicules et arrogants à peine esquissés, mais le rire éclate naturellement à la révélation des désirs incontrôlables.
La farce de Labiche, entre rires et grincements amers
C’est Léonida, la vieille fille romanesque, qui cherche à l’insu de tous un mari par le biais des petites annonces. Elle se rend à Paris avec ses compagnons et découvre que l’un des prétendants n’est autre que le pharmacien. L’équipée parisienne essuie des aventures tant regrettables qu’invraisemblables. Les touristes d’un jour sont dépossédés de leur argent : on les arrête pour vol. Ils s’enfuient de leur prison, puis sont rattrapés jusqu’à ce que le notaire les « sauve » pour les reconduire à La Ferté-sous-Jouarre. Metteurs en scène et acteurs aiment se frotter à cette odyssée rurale et citadine qu’est la farce de Labiche, entre rires et grincements amers, entre expression hyperbolique de soi-même et retenue pudique. La mise en scène de Laurence Andreini passe à côté des enjeux de fantastique et d’irréel, de rêve et de cauchemar que génère la pièce ; elle dirige « au premier degré » ses acteurs – réduits dès lors à la caricature de spécimens de terroirs profonds et d’époques révolues, femmes mal attifées, mouchoir à carreaux sur la tête et maintiens « paysans » pour les hommes. Il faudrait davantage de liberté et d’envolée pour qu’on ressente le joli tourbillon scénique de l’imprévisible Labiche.
