Crimp est joueur. Il utilise les lieux comme principes dramaturgiques. L’action de La Ville était labyrinthique. Celle de La Campagne voit ses contours progressivement s’estomper comme la lisière d’un bois à la tombée de la nuit. Tout commence comme dans un thriller. Un homme, médecin, marié, père de deux jeunes enfants, bien sous tous rapports, a quitté la ville pour la campagne afin d’y trouver le lieu d’une vie plus harmonieuse, moins soumise à l’artificielle effervescence citadine. Cet homme ramène au domicile familial une jeune fille qu’il affirme avoir ramassé inanimée au bord de la route. Les interrogations de sa femme soupçonneuse jaillissent, et les conversations téléphoniques avec un confrère Morris aidant, le doute grandit quant à cette version officielle. La suite de l’histoire, bien entendu, ne peut être dévoilée sans en affadir l’intérêt (comme quoi le suspens reste tout du long un élément prégnant). Mais le plaisir de Crimp tient souvent à s’amuser avec les registres et suivant ce principe, l’affaire se meut ici tour à tour en intrigue criminelle, en marivaudage, en crise existentielle, en histoire à la David Lynch, en drame de bourgeois qui craquellent la façade… Le tout dans une atmosphère d’inquiétante étrangeté que la simple évocation de la campagne britannique suffit parfois à inspirer.
Le parti-pris d’un certain naturalisme
Patrick Schmitt et sa troupe donnent à entendre le texte dans toutes ses subtilités. La mécanique dialogique de Crimp – répliques qui se chevauchent, mots repris, interrogés, tournures détournées…- y trouve tout son intérêt aux dépens cependant d’une interprétation qui manque de relief, et dessine ainsi des personnages plus incernables qu’inquiétants. Dans un décor qui évoque par touches légères le cottage anglais, le parti-pris d’un certain naturalisme lisse la fantaisie crimpienne dans un clair-obscur qui privilégie les dessous sombres de l’histoire à ses éclats de folie. Ce qui se déploie ici, c’est la matière intacte d’un texte aux circonvolutions incessantes, aux dimensions multiples, que le spectacle suit et sert fidèlement, avec une sobriété excessive sans doute, mais aussi avec sérieux, sensibilité, intelligence et finesse.
