Dans La Cantatrice chauve, Eugène Ionesco cherche à débusquer l’incongruité du quotidien et du langage. « Le comique, c’est de l’insolite pur, déclarait l’auteur d’origine roumaine. Rien ne me paraît plus surprenant que le banal ; le surréel est là, à la portée de nos mains, dans le bavardage de tous les jours. » En s’emparant de la première pièce du dramaturge, écrite en 1950, le metteur en scène Augustin Bécard vise à faire surgir la poésie qui naît de la réunion de divers univers : absurde, excentricité, mais aussi onirisme et surréalisme. « L’ensemble du spectacle est pensé comme une partition musicale à part entière, avec ses changements de rythme, ses ruptures et ses silences », explique-t-il. Sous sa direction, comédiens et musiciens composent « un théâtre physique où des corps profondément engagés sont porteurs d’une dramaturgie ». Un théâtre non psychologique, qui compose une véritable « ode à l’incongruité ».
