Définir l’esthétique de Jean-Philippe Calvin relève de la gageure. Ce compositeur a étudié à la fois avec Iannis Xenakis et John Williams, et est tout autant attiré par l’opéra que par le jazz, par la comédie musicale que par la musique de film. Ce trentenaire partage aujourd’hui sa vie entre Paris et Londres, où il enseigne au Royal College of Music. La Grande-Bretagne l’a bien adopté puisque c’est pour le Covent Garden, le prestigieux opéra londonien, qu’il a composé La Cantatrice chauve (dont l’action se passe d’ailleurs outre-Manche), reprise ce mois-ci en version française au Théâtre de l’Athénée. Jean-Philippe Calvin a réussi le défi d’adapter la pièce d’Eugène Ionesco en opéra grâce à un étonnant sens musical de l’absurdité. En mêlant des techniques d’écriture hétérogènes, sa partition affirme un ton débridé et fantasque, littéralement jouissif. Au Théâtre de l’Athénée, le casting est composé de voix encore peu connues mais prometteuses (Thomas Dear, Valérie Komar, Eléonore Lemaire…) et de solistes de l’Orchestre Lamoureux. La mise en scène est signée François Berreur et la direction musicale assurée par Carlos Dourthé.
