Ils sont tous là, gens de maison du peuple russe, anciens maîtres et futur conquérant d’entreprise, sous la verrière de la datcha près de La Cerisaie. La maison de famille est une cathédrale de verre articulée sous sa ferronnerie légère, une voûte céleste qui s’élève ou bien s’abaisse avec ses vitraux d’église sans couleurs, une chapelle ensoleillée et désertée de campagne. La transparence pénètre la demeure pour en faire un réceptacle sacré. : « Il fait moins trois et la cerisaie qui est en fleurs », dit le marchand Lopakhine (Jean-Louis Coulloc’h), le fils et petit-fils de moujik, futur propriétaire du domaine. Le climat et la saison sont bousculés, comme les repères sociaux et économiques, et les relations des hommes entre eux. Les maîtres ne sont plus les maîtres, et les anciens moujiks, entrepreneurs d’aujourd’hui, vont s’emparer des biens et reconstruire le monde. En 1904, au tournant du siècle, Tchekhov écrit en visionnaire La Cerisaie. Au moment du bal qui s’annonce pendant la vente du terrain d’arbres fruitiers, on voit descendre des cintres un magnifique lustre de cristal, un cône inversé éblouissant de reflets, une installation savante de verres à pied en équilibre, une mise en abyme de l’écoulement de la vie et de ses lumières.
Ne restent que les souvenirs
Tous les personnages ont des allures d’ombres, de fantômes, de rêves, de magiciens. Tout part et puis s’en va, comme le paradis d’enfance tandis que les peines subsistent. Lioubov (Jeanne Balibar), la propriétaire historique de la cerisaie et son frère Gaev (Gildas Milin) sont dépossédés de leur domaine, dépassés par un train de vie qu’ils ne peuvent plus assurer. Restent les souvenirs des joies éprouvées et des douleurs enfouies, ainsi la mort du petit garçon de Lioubov. La parole de Tchekhov, admirablement traduite par André Markowicz et François Morvan, court sur le plateau comme une mèche allumée, distribuée furtivement entre tous les personnages. Depuis les jeunes filles et femmes Ania (Judith Morisseau), Varia (Muriel Inès Amat), Charlotta (Cécile Péricone) et l’étudiant Trofimov (Vincent Macaigne) que la passion du verbe emporte et jusqu’à Firs (André Pomarat), le vieux valet de chambre, gardien des lieux. La qualité de l’atmosphère s’épanouit entre l’attrait du rêve refuge et une réalité brute : « la vie a passé on a comme pas vécu ». Les comédiens musiciens interprètent des chansons des communautés albanaises de Calabre, chants de mariage ukrainien et chants tsiganes roumains. Une Cerisaie sensible et poétique dans l’égrènement patient des pleurs et des joies.
