Truisme que de rappeler que Tchekhov enrageait quand Olga Knipper lui
racontait les pleurs qui coulaient lors des répétitions de ses pièces et qu’il
écrivait à Stanislavski pour lui redire qu’il écrivait des comédies !
L’équilibre entre le drame et le rire de la décence et de la farce est si
subtilement tenu dans La Cerisaie qu’on dirait que s’y joue la vie même :
« nous avons tous une cerisaie dans la tête et ses racines nous broient le
c’ur », dit Jean-Louis Martin-Barbaz qui met son talent à l’épreuve des
aventures de Lioubov, contrainte de vendre le domaine et de voir abattus les
arbres qu’elle aime tant. Comme si être et avoir demeuraient inconciliables, la
blancheur inutile des bouquets envoûtants sera sacrifiée sur l’autel de la
rentabilité, et les valeurs défuntes d’un monde qui n?a plus les moyens de sa
légèreté s’écroulent et se corrompent. « C’est peut-être une constante de
l’Histoire, dit Martin-Barbaz, l’Ancien Régime n?en finit jamais de
mourir. »
