En 1995, Valère Novarina publie aux éditions P.OL. La Chair de l’homme, un livre de 525 pages contenant 3171 personnages. La même année, le comédien Marc-Henri Lamande rencontre l’écriture de Novarina par le biais de Lettre aux acteurs, lors d’un spectacle au festival d’Avignon. Dès lors, la lecture d’autres textes de l’écrivain lui révèle, dit-il, « l’incontournable musicalité nécessaire au maniement du verbe de Novarina ». C’est alors qu’il fait une expérience lors d’une lecture en plein air enregistrée : « parcourir les 525 pages de La Chair de l’homme en diagonale, sans jamais revenir en arrière, en sautant d’un passage à l’autre guidé par son instinct. » Le spectacle présenté à Avignon-Reine blanche est le fruit de cette représentation mêlant les bruits captés par la bande enregistrée, le violoncelle de Louise Chirinian et un retravail sur le texte décortiqué comme s’il s’agissait d’une partition musicale : solfège, rythme, ponctuation, silence, phrasé… Sous-titré Diagonale 1, le spectacle laisse même ouvert le champ des possibles pour d’autres diagonales.
